Under Marina Bollaín's stage direction, a group of young actors has produced an updated version in Spanish of Bertolt Brecht's classic The Threepenny Opera, La ópera de 3 peniques. Bollaín has already produced her version of the celebrated zarzuela (Spanish operetta), La Verbena de la Paloma, and a zarzuela compilation work, Adiós Julián, as well as her own contemporary opera, Cuerpos Deshabitados (with music by José María Sánchez Verdú), a production about Moroccan immigration called Harragas and a children's musical, Historia de Yuco.
Here, Brecht's work talks to us of corruption, delinquency, economic crisis, prostitution, poverty and abuses in 1930s Germany. In Marina Bollaín's revised version there is no lack of tangled relationships, police intrigue or murder. The well-known London gangster Mackie Messer seduces the daughter of the "boss of the beggars"... A wedding in an old gymnasiun kicks-off a rapidly-escalating sequence of events featuring bold acts, beggars, prostitutes and the police plus a surprise finale.
