A theatrical event of refreshing beauty which astounds through its Chekhovian rhythms.
- Franco Quadri, La Repubblica
Women in love with those they should not be, married with those they don't love and all in the name of an essentially empty social decorum...
After more than 130 sold-out performances, Trilogia della villeggiatura, directed by Toni Servillo (recently honoured as Best Actor in the European Cinema Awards for his roles in the films, Gomorra and Il Divo), arrives in Madrid.
The production, which is made up of three separate comedies (Le smanie per la villeggiatura, Le avventure della villeggiatura and Il ritorno della villeggiatura) was written by Carlo Goldoni in 1761. Taken together, the trilogy constitutes a fresco of 18th century bourgeois society, focusing particularly on the "sentimental education" of four youngsters as they begin their summer holidays. As Sergio Escobar, director of the Piccolo Teatro, explains, the trilogy assumes "the melancholic confirmation of a world which changes through the magnifying glass of our contemporary emotions."
Trilogia della villeggiatura won the 2008 Ubu Prize for the Best Production of the Year.
