They make you laugh and then they try to make you cry. It's a collage of scenes, but there's a story too... Just call it a small miracle that 32 rue Vandenbranden turns out to be so well-balanced and beautifully paced.
- Hans-Maarten Post, Utopia Parkway
A snow-covered landscape. An open sky, the mountains and wind, with only rickety mobile homes for shelter. We find ourselves in a small, isolated community where the inhabitants are confronted with their own loneliness. They evolve in what is, above all, a 'mental' space in which the border between reality and what they believe happens in reality, becomes blurred. At the same time, the music helps to create the troubling and melancholic atmosphere so characteristic of the Peeping Tom company. The enveloping sound is the first stage on a hypnotic journey towards the dreams, fears and desires of the protagonists.
Gabriela Carrizo (Argentina, 1970) and Franck Chartier (France, 1967) founded the Peeping Tom company in 2000. Playing their part in the recent Belgian choreography boom (both have worked with Needcompany and Alain Platel), they produced the trilogy, Le Jardin, Le Salon and Le Sous Sol, a hugely successful award-winning work which was performed more than 350 times and which brought to the stage the life of a family confronting its destiny.
32, rue Vandenbranden premiered in Brussels in November 2009.
