H2 is more than just hip hop. It’s also breakdance, popping, footwork and street dance but there’s even more. Away from the top names of street dance and the intense virility surrounding these dance circles, H2 goes beyond the limits to deliver a mix of styles approaching the level of modern dance. The distinctive notes of Rimsky-Korsakov ’s Flight of the Bumble Bee emerge from the stage together with Naná Vasconcelos’ percussion and the funk of French band CQMD (Ceux Qui Marchent Debout). A white stage backdrop lights up in time with the dancers in green and purple and, at the bottom, the words: ‘Hip hop loves the beat of music’. The dancers of Grupo de Rua fly, tumble and get up for more. Driven by a formidable force, they move between balance, poetry and speed in a choreography which demonstrates the infinite potential of hip hop, once it’s been freed from preconceptions and labels.
