Austrian musician, Evan Jantschitsch, better known as Gustav, is seen by many as a feminist icon and the political conscience of her generation. On her new album, Verlass die Stadt, the styles alternate between experimental computer-generated sound, traditional Austrian music, Sicilian mandolins, pop hymns and modern-day protest songs. Live elements include electronica, neo-folk and songs with a universal appeal sung in various languages including English, French and German. Jantschitsch, who lives and works in Vienna, has also written and produced music for theatre and cinema.
Throughout her career, she has almost always worked on her own but has also collaborated with artists such as Oliver Stotz and Elise Mory. Her first album, Rettet die Wale (2004), won both critical and public acclaim and in May this year, she released the follow-up, Verlass die Stadt, which she herself considers to be a darker work, both politically and emotionally.
